UO’s Slug Queen Todd will champion science

Score one for science.

Brandy Todd, assistant director for administration at the UO Oregon Center for Optics, was named 2013 Eugene Slug Queen Aug. 9, joining the celebrated ranks of unofficial ambassadors who champion causes during a one-year “rain” over this quirky city we call home.

“I’m very pleased and honored,” Todd said recently, green eye shadow still gracing her face from the competition. “It’s a wonderful and irreverent cadre to be invited into.”

McKenzie River interdisciplinary initiative inspires students, serves community

For University of Oregon senior Starr Hathaway, all it took was one field trip to the McKenzie River.

“Immediately I fell in love,” said the environmental and cinema studies major. “Due to the natural qualities of the river, it’s extremely unique, but it’s also a cultural gold mine. I can’t think of too many other places that are like it, to be honest.”

New graduate specializations launching this fall

Four new specializations will become part of the graduate curricula starting in the 2013-14 academic year.

Housed within existing areas of study, the new areas offer specialized credentials to graduate students who meet the requirements. The expansions fit with the graduate school’s aim of being forward-thinking to help students meet the needs of the future.
