Big data on campus

Data visualization - communicating information clearly and effectively through graphical means - is the focus of a presentation by UO physics professor Greg Bothun at 4 p.m. today (Feb. 15) in room 101 of the Knight Library.

The free presentation is sponsored by the office for Research, Innovation and Graduate Education. Refreshments will be served.

“Moving forward, big data is only going to become more and more relevant to researchers from all disciplines,” Bothun said. “Finding new ways to visualize data is key to our success as a research university.”

Rose named interim chancellor for OUS

Melody Rose became the first female chancellor of the Oregon University System when she was named to the position on an interim basis today (Feb. 14) by the State Board of Higher Education.

Rose was previously the vice chancellor for academic strategies at OUS and has held leadership positions at Portland State University. She will take office a chancellor on March 2, succeeding outgoing chancellor George Pernsteiner.

Third-year law student receives inaugural Linde award

University of Oregon law student Elizabeth Brown has been awarded the Hans Linde Fellowship for Spring 2013 by the UO's Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics.

The fellowship honors former Oregon Supreme Court Justice Hans Linde. It supports legal research and activities, and the development and operation of institutions that address issues extending beyond traditional borders. 

Call for Williams Fellowship nominations

The Williams Council is inviting all University of Oregon faculty, department heads and deans to nominate colleagues for this year's Williams Fellowships.

The deadline for nominations if Monday, March 18.

The Williams Council is a presidential advisory council that includes some of the university's best teaching faculty. Its fellows program recognizes faculty who have made outstanding contributions to undergraduate learning at the UO.

Recognition award programs accepting nominations

Two recognition programs, one for outstanding classified employees and the other for outstanding officers of administration, are now open and UO Human Resources is accepting nominations through noon on March 7.

The programs were created to acknowledge excellent employees. All UO faculty and staff members are encouraged to nominate colleagues, co-workers, supervisors and employees who have made outstanding contributions to the UO in the past year. 

UO cartographers' Atlas of Yellowstone wins major award

The Atlas of Yellowstone – initiated nine years ago as a class project in the University of Oregon’s Department of Geography – has been named the recipient of a top honor in the American Publishers Association' PROSE (Professional and Scholarly Excellence) Awards.

The Atlas received the organization's award for Excellence in Physical Sciences and Mathematics – one of the top five PROSE categories.
