College of Ed offers free couples’ counseling for Valentine’s Day

Couples seeking a Valentine's Day check-up for their relationships can sign up for sessions with graduate student therapists at the University of Oregon.

The College of Education's Couples and Family Therapy (CFT) Program will host a “Relationship Check-In” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the HEDCO Clinic, 1655 Alder St., on the UO campus.

FACULTY PROFILE: Life-long Texan feeling at home in UO English Department

For many, arriving at the University of Oregon after spending their lives in Texas would be a radical change of pace. For Kirby Brown, an assistant professor in the UO English Department and a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, the move to Eugene two years ago was a smooth transition.

“Of the available jobs… the vibe at the University of Oregon and the city of Eugene reminded me most of home,” Brown said.

Knight Library features exhibit of Alan Turing, "founder of computer science"

An exhibit showcasing the accomplishments of Alan Turing is on display in the cases located at the east and west entryway corridors in the Knight Library.

The exhibit, which will run through April, is entitled “Alan Turing- the Founder of Computer Science.”

The exhibit highlights Turing’s work successfully breaking Nazi Enigma codes during World War II and his work developing mathematical models in biology in the area of morphogenesis at Manchester University.

Gottfredson, Wheeler meet with students on new aid plan

With the cost of a college education in Oregon rising rapidly, State Treasurer Ted Wheeler is proposing a new way to bring stability to student financial assistance.

Wheeler and University of Oregon President Michael Gottfredson on Tuesday introduced that plan to local students during a discussion in the UO Knight Library, hoping to raise support for a proposal that must be approved by the Legislature and eventually Oregon voters.

Warsaw team wins national marketing competition

The sports marketing world moves fast – but not too fast for students in the University of Oregon’s Warsaw Sports Marketing Center.

A team of four UO MBA students associated with the center bested teams from seven other schools for a first-ever win in the National Sports Forum’s Case Cup Competition, which challenged graduate students to create a successful marketing campaign for a client in just 24 hours.

Gabonese delegation on campus as part of U.S. State Department tour and due to Gabon-Oregon Center agreement

A 14-person delegation from the west-central African nation of Gabon – including Gabonese education minister Séraphin Moundounga – are at the University of Oregon today.

The group is on tour of universities, community colleges and vocational schools in the Western United States, arranged by the U.S. Department of State.

The Gabonese delegation visited Sacramento and the San Francisco area before coming to Eugene. A trip to Corvallis with stops on Tuesday at Linn-Benton Community College and Oregon State University are next on the agenda.

UO faculty asked to nominate undergraduate researchers for library awards

University of Oregon faculty members are being encouraged to contact student authors of exceptional papers or theses and urge them to submit applications before the Feb. 4 deadline for the UO Libraries' annual Undergraduate Research Awards.

Undergraduates who complete outstanding research projects using library resources and services are eligible for awards as high as $1,500. A letter of support from a sponsoring UO faculty member is required as part of the application process.
