Faculty members are invited to apply for a faculty-in-residence program at the Kalapuya Ilihi residence hall for fall 2020.

The faculty-in-residence program, co-sponsored by the Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success and University Housing, helps shape the intellectual life of the residence halls and expand the academic experience beyond the walls of the classroom. The Global Scholars Hall, Justice Bean Hall and Kalapuya  Ilihi each host a single faculty-in-residence position.

“The faculty-in-residence program allows faculty to become part of the residence life team, both within their community and in collaboration with academic partners, professional staff and student leaders across the residence halls,” said Kevin Hatfield, assistant vice provost for undergraduate research. “The Kalapuya Ilihi FIR will enjoy opportunities to engage with students outside the classroom from formal programs and events to more spontaneous interactions and individual conversations.”

Debra Thompson, an associate professor of political science, is the current faculty member for Kalapuya Ilihi. Known for hosting Sunday morning coffee in the community kitchen, Thompson said she has enjoyed being able to connect with students beyond the classroom.

“Being the faculty-in-residence of Kalapuya Ilihi has truly been one of the highlights of my time at the UO,” Thompson said. “The position has given me the opportunity to get to know students in a completely different way than we do as professors in front of a classroom. I’ve had the chance to meet with them often, in the space that they call home, and help them figure out the type of people they want to become. It’s been an honor.”

Thompson said her two young children have also enjoyed their time living in Kalapuya Ilihi. The students in the community have been very kind and generous with them, she said.

Faculty members interested in the position can attend a catered reception and open house hosted by the current resident faculty members and residence life staff Monday, March 16, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Kalapuya Ilihi faculty apartment.
