Collaboration and compassion create space for everybody

Who's That Duck?

Name: Ryan Theiss

Job title, department: Office Specialist II, Robert D. Clark Honors College

How long you have been at UO?

I have been at the Clark Honors College for years.

Do you have any advice for newer employees?

Do the work to build a collaborative environment with your coworkers. Every individual has a wide array of assets and knowledge to bring to the table, if they are encouraged and feel comfortable.

Tell us about a professional success story that you’re proud of.

The back and forth during the COVID-19 pandemic created a lot of operational discomfort for units. A few others and I managed and coordinated Chapman Hall’s response, always ensuring we were effectively and safely operating, as information would change day to day. I developed a resumption plan document that outlined every aspect of our staff, faculty and students returning to Chapman Hall. It was a huge undertaking and very rewarding work. It took a village and it’s rare to encounter a situation that has you interacting so closely with a large group across many different professions, units, expertise.

How do you help students or coworkers create a sense of belonging?

I bring myself to every interaction. I meet them as an individual and treat them as a human. When you create an environment of curiosity and compassion, it becomes easier for people to find a place. Sometimes that means making space for someone.

What is a favorite spot on your campus (for coffee or to relax)?

There is a large European Beech just off the northeast corner of the Knight Library. Ideal spot for napping or reading a book during lunch, preferably with a slight breeze to ruffle the leaves.

What are you reading/watching/listening to these days?

So many podcasts. I also have been loving the TV show “Severance.”

Ryan Theiss was a 2023 Outstanding Employee Award recipient.
