KWAX Classical Oregon, the University of Oregon’s all-classical public radio station, will deck the halls and airwaves with 28 Christmas and holiday specials Dec. 24-26.
The station, at 91.1 FM, will offer a holiday feast of classical performances from some of the world’s greatest artists, orchestras and choral groups. The programming starts at 8 a.m. Christmas Eve with “A Rochester Festival of Lessons and Carols.”
The day’s programs include “The Canadian Brass Christmas” at 3 p.m., “Joshua Bell and Friends Christmas Party” at 5 p.m., and Handel’s Messiah performed by the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and Chorus at 8 p.m.
Christmas Day highlights include the “St. Olaf Christmas Festival” at 8 a.m., “Christmas with the King Singers” at 2 p.m., music from classic Christmas movies at 3 p.m., and The New York Philharmonic Christmas concert at 8 p.m.
Musical festivities continue on Chanukah, Dec. 26 at 10 a.m., with “Sound the Shofar,” a program about how the distinctive instrument—made from a ram’s horn—is employed during the Jewish High Holidays. At 4 p.m., “Itzhak Perlman’s Chanukah Party” caps the KWAX holiday specials.
In addition to the three-day schedule of specials, listed on the radio station’s website, the station is interspersing seasonal favorites and sacred works by great composers throughout its regular programming from now to the holiday.
Listeners in Central Oregon, from Florence to Newport on the Oregon Coast and from Douglas County to Salem can enjoyed the music via the station’s extensive network of transmitters and translators.
