Training offered on Asian Pacific Islander mental health

The Counseling Center and the Asian Pacific Islander Strategic Initiatives Group are bringing in Dr. D.J. Ida and J.R. Kuo from the National Asian American and Pacific Islander Mental Health Association to provide a training for faculty and staff members.

The training takes place at 8:30 a.m. Monday, May 9, in the Ford Alumni Center, Giustina Ballroom. It is free for faculty and staff to attend, continuing education certificates will be provided and a light breakfast will be served.

Participants will engage in a discussion on working with domestic and international Asian and Pacific Islander populations, challenges they may face on campus and in the community, and solutions they have found to be effective.

The training is designed to help faculty and staff members understand how to work with domestic and international Asian and Pacific Islander students from a culturally appropriate perspective through five modules. Module I: Cultural Self-Awareness, Module II: Cross Cultural Communication, Module III: Conducting Culturally Appropriate Assessments, Module IV: Culturally Appropriate Intervention Strategies, and Module V: Culturally Competent Systems.

The training will help increase positive outcomes by understanding the effect of culture, language and historical trauma at each step of the therapeutic process.
