UO community can participate in safety walk to help improve night access

Safety is on everyone’s mind, and the University of Oregon works to actively improve its processes.

Faculty, staff and students are invited to participate in the annual Campus Night Safety Walk Nov. 4. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Knight Library Browsing Room with an overview of previous night safety projects and a chance to learn about night safety broadly including Duck Rides, access shuttle, safety escorts and self-defense classes.

To get participants fueled up for the event, pizza will be provided during a discussion of walking routes and instructions for the evening’s activities.

Groups will spread out across the campus using their mobile devices to interact with the safety at night map. Participants will drop pins on the map to indicate areas where improvements in lighting, hardscaping and landscaping are needed for nighttime safety.

After completing the walk, participants will return to the library for a short debrief session, followed by dessert.

To assist with event planning, participants are encouraged to RSVP by Nov. 3. Everyone’s participation and feedback are crucial in making the UO a safer place.

The event is hosted by the Associated Students of the University of Oregon, Campus Planning and Facilities Management, the Office of the Dean of Students, UO Police Department, and Safety and Risk Services.
