Wednesday marks formal investiture of President Michael Schill

The UO campus will pause from its usual pre-finals routine today to mark the formal investiture of President Michael H. Schill.

The ceremony begins at 2 p.m. in Matthew Knight Arena. The campus community is invited, and the event will be broadcast live on The UO Channel.

Schill, the UO’s 18th president, will formally receive the symbols of office from UO Board of Trustees chair Chuck Lillis in a ceremony that dates back to the early days of higher education. In his address, Schill will cheer the university’s achievements and look ahead to its challenges.

The ceremony will be preceded by a presentation and panel discussion on the issues and opportunities facing modern public research universities. Taking part in those events will be Columbia University professor and former provost Jonathan Cole, University of California, Los Angeles, Chancellor Gene Block, a UO alumnus, and other higher education experts.

Following the ceremony, a reception will be held in the Giustina Ballroom of the Ford Alumni Center. The full schedule of events is available on the investiture website.
