UO commencement to celebrate graduates and families on June 17

The University of Oregon will celebrate more than 5,000 eligible graduates in commencement exercises on Monday, June 17.

Graduates are encouraged to celebrate along with their families and members of the community in a day filled with activities throughout campus. No tickets will be required at any of the 2013 graduation ceremonies, and graduates may invite as many guests as they choose.

Research Excellence Awards go to six faculty members

The breadth and depth of discovery at the University of Oregon was highlighted at a recent ceremony celebrating the 2013 Research Excellence Awards. Honors were handed out to six UO faculty members in history, biology, chemistry, architecture, English and linguistics. The event took place at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.

President Michael Gottfredson, in his opening remarks, pointed to the fact that the awardees were nominated by their peers for the awards and noted how pleased he was to be able to recognize faculty for their research.

2013 Oregon Programming Languages Summer School: Types, Logic, and Verification

Leading researchers in the field of programming languages will come to the University of Oregon for the 11th annual Oregon Programming Languages Summer School, running July 22 to Aug. 3.

The school hosts the world's leading researchers in the field of programming languages for a series of tutorial style lectures on current research. The focus is "Types, Logic, and Verification," an investigation of the interplay between theory and practice in program verification.

Crystal Apples fall into the hands of revered faculty

For three exceptional faculty members, receiving an apple for teaching may never have been so sweet. Last week, University of Oregon President Michael Gottfredson paid surprise visits to a trio of educators and presented them with Crystal Apple awards.

The Crystal Apple is an annual award given to three outstanding professors who are nominated by students and colleagues. This year’s winners are Richard York from Sociology, Sara Hodges from Psychology, and Colin Koopman from Philosophy.

Honors College gets an overhaul

When the Robert D. Clark Honors College opened its doors in 1960 as a channel for challenging Oregon’s smartest students, the best and brightest were taught in the rather dim basement of Friendly Hall.

The oldest honors college in the country with a four-year curriculum, the Clark Honors College (CHC) bided in that basement for 18 years.
