Abstracts being accepted for next Undergraduate Research Symposium

Faculty members, staff and graduate students are being asked to encourage undergraduates who are conducting research to participate in the 10th annual Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Next year’s event is scheduled for May 21, 2020. This year’s symposium was attended by more than 500 student researchers with 290 faculty mentors.

Students can apply to participate by submitting an abstract to the Undergraduate Research Symposium website no later than April 6 at 11:59 p.m. Guidelines about the abstract application process are included on the application link page.

“Research engages students in knowledge creation,” said Kevin Hatfield, assistant vice provost for undergraduate research, who co-chairs the Undergraduate Research Symposium committee.  “Data shows that this type of experiential learning — learning by doing — is an especially effective way to work with course material.”

Undergraduates from all disciplines and majors can present their research, creative work or scholarship that is developed as part of a course, thesis, major or minor preparation, study abroad program or independent study project overseen by a faculty mentor. Students are also highly encouraged to present work that is still in progress and not complete, as the symposium provides an opportunity to receive constructive feedback.

The Undergraduate Research Symposium is sponsored by the Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success, the Center for Undergraduate Research and Engagement, Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation, University Housing, Robert D. Clark Honors College, UO Libraries, TRIO McNair Scholars Program and Division of Student Life.
