The deadline is quickly approaching for undergraduates to apply to present their research or creative work at the 2019 Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Faculty members, staff and graduate students should encourage undergraduates with research to apply by submitting an abstract to the Undergraduate Research Symposium website no later than April 3 at 11:59 p.m. Guidelines about the abstract application process are included on the application link page.

A last-minute abstract editing workshop will be offered on April 3, from 4 to 5 p.m. in Chapman Hall 101.

Last year more than 380 undergraduate students presented their work at the symposium, which is sponsored by the Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success, the Center for Undergraduate Research and Engagement, the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation, University Housing, the Robert D. Clark Honors College, the UO Libraries, the TRIO McNair Scholars Program and the Division of Student Life.

“I had a chance to visit with some of the students who participated in last year’s Undergraduate Research Symposium and I was very impressed by their work,” said Provost and Senior Vice President Jayanth Banavar. “This event is critical to the development of our undergraduate students. It allows them to engage in research and other scholarly activities. It also gives them an understanding of what it’s like to conduct research at the next level and beyond. I highly encourage faculty to urge their students to participate in this wonderful opportunity.”

Students from all disciplines and majors can present their research, creative work or scholarship developed as part of a course, thesis, major or minor preparation, study abroad program or independent study project overseen by a faculty mentor. Students are also highly encouraged to present work that is still in progress and not “finished,” as the symposium provides the opportunity for them to receive constructive feedback.

This year’s symposium will be in the EMU on Thursday, May 16, with oral presentations and creative work sessions beginning at 10 a.m. A catered reception and keynote address start at 5 p.m. and the poster session will begin at 5:30 p.m.
