UO English professor and director of comic studies Ben Saunders was featured in a news article in the San Diego Union Tribune as more than 130,000 comic fans, artists and writers descend on the city this week for the 46th annual Comic-Con International.
In the July 4 story, Saunders talks about the history of diversity in American comics.
“[Comics were] less subject to the kinds of racial barriers that a young artist would encounter in the other U.S. communications industries during the 1940s and ’50s,” Saunders said. “There were African-American, Japanese-American, Chinese-American, Latin-American, Italian-American and ... many Jewish-American comic artists, from the 1940s onward.”
