Campus awards recognize efforts to improve sustainability

The University of Oregon shared the winners of the annual UO Sustainability Awards. These awards are each sponsored by a different UO department and recognize sustainability excellence across the university.

The 2025 award recipients are:

  • Student Leadership, Undergraduate Studies: Valentine Bentz and Hattie Sterns, for leadership and program development of the Grove Community Garden. The award is sponsored by the Student Sustainability Center.
  • Student Leadership, Graduate Studies: Dehlia Wolftail and Madison Fowler, for leadership and efforts in support of a more equitable update to the NW Forest Plan. The award also is sponsored by the Student Sustainability Center. Both student leadership awards—graduate and undergraduate—recognize students who have made significant impacts towards human equity, environmental vitality and economic well-being at the UO.
  • Town and Gown: City of Eugene and Eugene Water and Electric Board for multi-year support of the Score Home Energy Assessment program. The award is sponsored by Government and Community Relations and recognizes individuals or groups for projects that promote, educate or enhance a more sustainable community. 
  • Excellence in Teaching: Nicole Ngo, Planning, Public Policy and Management, and Kory Russel, Landscape Architecture and Environmental Studies. The award is sponsored by the Office of the Provost’s Teaching Engagement Program and recognizes faculty who have developed pedagogy and curriculum that reinforce and advance principles of sustainability through course design and instruction.
  • Sustainable Purchasing: UO Outdoor Program. The award is sponsored by Purchasing and Contracting Services and recognizes an employee or team for the introduction of a sustainability best practice into their department or unit’s purchasing of goods or services.
  • Research and Scholarship: Leigh Johnson, Geography. The award is sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation and recognizes a UO researcher whose research has made significant contributions to human knowledge related to sustainability.
  • Innovation and Impact: Colin Ives, Art. The award also is sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation and recognizes a UO project whose innovations were developed in the course of UO research and are now offered as publicly available products or services that improve sustainability.
  • Student Support and Programming: Derrick Hindery, mentor for the Coalition for Indigenous Rights and Environmental Justice in Bolivia. The award is sponsored by the Division of Student Life and recognizes an individual, team or department unit for student-focused programs, projects or initiatives related to sustainability.
  • Sustainable Campus: Landscaping and Grounds team, for University Day and other efforts to make campus landscapes both sustainable and beautiful. The award is sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration and recognizes an employee or team for the introduction of a sustainability best practice into their department or unit’s day-to-day work or their service to campus.
  • Campus Design: Huestis Hall remodel, project sponsors Mike Pluth and Hal Sadofsky. The award is sponsored jointly by Campus Planning and Design and Construction and recognizes units or individuals who have demonstrated leadership and creativity in support of the Oregon Model for Sustainable Development

Winners receive a physical award and are celebrated at a dinner and awards ceremony, hosted by the Office of Sustainability. Winners also receive a video showcasing their contributions
