Joe Lowndes talks politics with Newsweek and Al Jazeera

Political science professor Joe Lowndes looked at both sides of the upcoming presidential election in recent interviews with Newsweek magazine and the Al-Jazeera television network.

Speaking with Newsweek about shifts in Republican views on social issues that make up the “culture wars,” Lowndes said many conservative voters now are more concerned about race and class than social issues like abortion and gay marriage. He said that even if Trump loses, the ideas he is channeling will continue to influence future elections.

“I think Trump is quite likely to lose in November,” Lowndes told the magazine, “but I think Trump-ism is not going anywhere.”

On the other side of the political spectrum, Al-Jazeera asked Lowndes about the options Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders has if current trends hold up and he fails to win enough delegates for the party nomination. Even if Hillary Clinton is the Democrats' choice for November, Lowndes said Sanders still could influence the Democratic convention and push the party platform further to the left.

“There’s a lot he wants to be able to do even after her victory,” Lowndes said.
