While no university looks forward to a campus emergency, they all need to be prepared to handle one should the need arise.
The UO is constantly honing its emergency operations plans, and its efforts to be prepared made it the spotlight of a recent article in The Chronicle of Higher Education. The story looks at the many potential threats campuses face and the best ways to get ready for them.
When a meningitis outbreak hit campus last year, the UO used its emergency plan to guide the response. When a gunman attacked Umpqua Community College earlier this month, the UO was able to help the school navigate through the crisis.
As the Chronicle story points out, “Whatever the hazard, … the University of Oregon intends to be ready.”
"It isn’t just looking at it by the peril or hazard, being earthquake, fire, or whatnot," said Andre Le Duc, director of Enterprise Risk Services at the UO. "It’s looking at what are things that could impact our ability to meet our strategic objectives."
