Mohr delivers lecture for United States Federation of State Medical Boards

Professor James Mohr delivered a lecture in January for the United States Federation of State Medical Boards on his recent book, “Licensed to Practice: The Supreme Court Defines the American Medical Profession.”

The federation was interested in Mohr’s work that examined how the medical boards obtained American licensing powers, as well as how they have retained them for the last 125 years. His lecture offered perspective on the origin of policies that are still administered. It was broadcast through closed-circuit television to the membership and staff of all American state medical boards.

Mohr, a College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor of History and a Phillip H. Knight Professor of Social Sciences, earned his bachelor’s degree from Yale University in 1965 and his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1969. He has been a member of the history department since 1992.

The United States Federation of State Medical Boards is an umbrella organization that coordinates the efforts of about 70 state-level regulatory boards across the country.
