The University of Oregon’s Oregon Quarterly has been awarded a silver medal in the “Articles of the Year” category by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education’s (CASE) 2014 Circle of Excellence.
Author and UO 2012 graduate Elisabeth Kramer received the award for "The Stand She Took," a story entrenched in UO history and the formation of Oregon’s “shield” laws. The article chronicles the 1966 Oregon Daily Emerald editor Annette Buchanan’s trial for contempt of court following her refusal to name sources in an Emerald article about marijuana use on campus.
“It’s especially exciting that this award went to an article written by a recent graduate,” said Ann Wiens, Oregon Quarterly editor. “Beth is in great company— Other award winners include writers for some exceptional magazines, including The Atlantic.”
Kramer researched Annette Buchanan’s trial for a class project during her senior year at the UO, which set the foundation for her Oregon Quarterly article. “The Stand She Took” was chosen out of 44 entries in its category.
