Paul Swangard, managing director of the University of Oregon's Warsaw Sports Marketing Center in the Lundquist College of Business, has been the public address announcer at Hayward Field for almost 20 years. He recently sat down with the Daily Emerald to discuss his announcing career.
Swangard, who was recently honored with the University of Oregon Track and Field Hall of Fame Award, discussed what it was like to replace Wendy Ray as the voice of Hayward Field, what his favorite meet is to call and how he keeps from tripping up on difficult name pronunciations.
“My lasting legacy, hopefully, will be the fact that I coined the phrase the Bowerman Curve,” said Swangard about what moment stands out in his career. “There was something about Hayward that needed some sort of iconic descriptor, and I thought ‘well, there is the Bowerman building and there is a statue of him, so let’s just make this the Bowerman curve.’”
