The 2026–27 peer coaching program offers a structured way to build coaching skills and connect with colleagues across the University of Oregon. Rooted in Michael Bungay Stanier’s The Coaching Habit and How to Tame Your Advice Monster, the program helps participants practice listening and resist the urge to jump straight to giving advice.
Faculty, classified staff and officers of administration are invited to participate in one of two roles:
- Coaches will support a colleague while developing their own leadership and communication skills.
- Coachees will receive guidance and encouragement from a peer to help them navigate challenges and reach goals.
To be invited to the Oct. 12 program kickoff, submit an interest form by Sept. 24. Attending the kickoff does not commit you to participating in the program. You’re invited whether you’re ready to participate, still deciding or simply want an introduction to coaching concepts. No prior experience is required.
Past participants have shared a wide range of positive outcomes, including meaningful personal and professional growth.
“I was initially hesitant about participating in a coaching program, but it turned out to be a genuinely positive and meaningful experience,” said Ali Söken, faculty consultant with the Teaching Engagement Program. “I would wholeheartedly encourage others to give it a try, regardless of where they are in their personal or professional journey.”
“[My coach and I] followed the template provided by the organizers to initiate meaningful conversation, and that evolved into a thoughtful exchange of ideas,” said Wes Estill, trades maintenance worker with Intercollegiate Athletics. “My professional development has been positively affected forever by this relationship with a dedicated and truly inspirational coach.”
