Drones are seemingly everywhere these days, and now even journalists are being taught to get in on the action.

The UO School of Journalism and Communication is one of four university hosts for Poynter Institute workshops offering journalists training on how to best utilize this new technology in their field. The workshops drew news coverage after their announcement by the Poynter Institute.

The three-day workshop will be held Aug. 16-18 at the UO’s Portland campus. The classes are offered in partnership with Google News Lab, the Drone Journalism Lab at the University of Nebraska, the National Press Photographer’s Association and DJI — a company specializing in aerial camera systems.

“One reason we wanted to conduct these workshops is because we were seeing one-day training workshops that are too expensive for journalists,” said Poynter’s Al Tompkins, who is organizing the workshops. “We want to put this knowledge within reach of every newsroom regardless of size.”
