“Takin’ it to the Streets” – it’s not just a Doobie Brothers classic.
It’s also the name of an annual service project by more than 60 UO students and partners to give back to the communities in which they live by participating in a day of service.
“Takin’ it to the Streets” is an annual service project aimed to improve near-campus area neighborhoods and bring neighbors together with a shared activity.
Students, neighborhood and city partners, Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy, UO Vice President for Student Affairs Robin Holmes and the a capella group Mind the Gap will be on hand for the event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at West University Park, E. 14th Ave. and Hilyard Street. A celebration begins at 1 p.m.
Additional projects will be done in the Fairmount, South University and West University neighborhoods from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- In the Fairmount neighborhood, volunteers will improve walking paths and remove secondary invasive species from the forest floor of Hendricks Park.
- In the Fairmount neighborhood near the South University neighborhood, volunteers will improve Washburne Park by completing planting, landscaping, tree well and bench maintenance projects.
- In the West University neighborhood, volunteers will partner with Friends of Trees coordinators to plant street trees.
- Volunteers will distribute door to door “Thunder Can” fliers regarding pick up and storage placement of refuse and recycling cans in South University neighborhood.
Media are welcome to attend the service projects and the celebration and leaders from the University of Oregon, City of Eugene and neighborhoods will be available for interviews.
