Three UO graduate students will travel to the state championship in the Three-Minute Thesis competition after winning the top spots in the campus competition.

The winners are doctoral students Alison Kaufman, musicology; Christen Knowles, special education; and Brandy Todd, educational methodology policy and leadership. The state championship will be held Saturday, May 16, at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland.

Kaufman took first place in the May 1 campus contest with the presentation “Benevento vs. Charlemagne.” The runner-ups were Knowles, with “Teach About the Moon, Don’t Drive There: Telehealth As A Special Education Service Delivery Solution,” and Todd, with “Little Scientists.”

The students had just three minutes to explain their research in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience, while accompanied by a single, static PowerPoint slide. Each short speech was assessed by a panel of three judges.

Audience members voted for the People’s Choice award, which went to Margaret Rosencrans, a doctoral student in school psychology. Her presentation was “Relations Between Parental Self-Efficacy, Parenting Behavior, and Child Outcomes in Developmental Delays.”
