UO professor interviewed on gender and bathrooms on public radio

The backlash against gender-neutral bathrooms is nothing new, says one UO political scientist.

Alison Gash, an assistant professor of political science was interviewed on Michigan Public Radio. She explained that the recent controversy around gender-neutral bathrooms is a continuation of the backlash that the LGBTQ community has long endured.

“One of the things that I suspect is going on is that as soon as you close the door on one kind of discrimination — the Supreme Court closed the door on discrimination in the context of marriage — that backlash and that opposition get funneled into a different arena,” Gash said. “And right now that arena is in the context of reactions to bathroom policies that permit transgender folks to use the bathroom of their choice.”
