Jane Gordon, associate dean for student and program affairs at the UO School of Law, will be honored March 6 with the Center for Dialogue and Resolution’s 2013 PeaceBuilder Award during its 4th annual Peace by Piece gala.
The event is open to the public and will take place at the Ford Alumni Center from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Journalist Rick Dancer will emcee.
The event is being held in celebration of the Center for Dialogue and Resolution and marks the organization’s 30th anniversary. Formerly known as Community Mediation Services, CDR is the evolution of the mediation center Gordon co-founded after her graduation from the UO School of Law in 1979.
Gordon joined the law school in 1989 as an assistant dean, and became associate dean in 1994. She currently teaches small claims mediation and probate mediation – programs she has developed. She also teaches a course on perspectives in conflict resolution for the graduate program in Conflict and Dispute Resolution.
Gordon became director of the law school's Appropriate Dispute Resolution Center in 2001. The center has established opportunities to engage students, practitioners and community members in conflict and dispute resolution through its master’s degree program and public policy collaborative internship program, among other offerings.
Gordon is committed to Oregon's community mediation programs, and has been instrumental in securing state funding for educational programming for nearly a decade.
She has taught international negotiation in Paris, Barcelona and Florence, and has been a lead mediation trainer for a multi-year project with colleagues in Ukraine.
For the past five years, Gordon has served as chair of the Northwest Institute for Conflict Resolution, an organization structured to support young people working on conflict resolution projects around the world. She is also a member of the War Prevention Initiative Advisory Board.
Her service on the Oregon State Bar ADR Executive Committee included a year as its chair. She received the Oregon State Bar ADR Section's Sidney Lezak Award for Excellence in the field of dispute resolution last year.
Check-in and reception for the Peace by Piece gala will begin at 5:30 p.m. Guests will be served dinner followed by dessert from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Gordon will be presented the Peace Builder Award.
The Center for Dialogue and Resolution will also present a first-ever Founder’s Award to an individual who has shown outstanding commitment to building peace in the community.
