The Wayne Morse Center is now accepting applications for its new Undergraduate Scholars program. The program offers an opportunity for a select group of undergraduate students to study public affairs and American politics from practical, analytical and ethical perspectives.
University of Oregon sophomores and juniors from all disciplines are welcome to apply for the Scholars program. Between 15 and 20 students per year will be selected, primarily on the basis of academic merit, service experiences and demonstrated interest in politics or public policy.
Scholars benefit from the intimate and hands-on learning environment facilitated by the Wayne Morse Center to study compelling issues in government and politics. Seminars, leadership training, supervised internships and research, and discussions with government officials, political practitioners and visiting scholars are all components of advantages that Wayne Morse students receive.
Political science professor and Wayne Morse Senior Faculty Fellow Dan Tichenor will be heading up the new program. He will teach a special seminar on democratic dilemmas, organize workshops and supervise service learning projects, internships and honors thesis work for seniors.
Other special events include field trips to Salem to observe the Oregon House, Senate, Supreme Court and executive branch at work, as well as meeting with state officials and their staffs.
All eligible students are encouraged to apply by Oct. 24. More information and applications details for the Wayne Morse Scholars program are available online.
