Winter weather can affect classes, work schedules and other campus activities. While the University of Oregon rarely closes entirely, snow and ice may lead to delays or cancellations. Here are some things employees should know before severe weather arrives.
Closure, delay and cancellation announcements
When the forecast calls for severe weather, university leadership will determine whether campus operations need to be delayed, canceled or closed. Decisions are typically announced in the morning through:
- UO email. All employees will receive a message at their uoregon.edu address.
- UO Alerts texts. Sign up for UO Alerts texts.
- UO Alerts webpage. Check for the latest announcements.
Unless the university announces a change, normal campus operations will continue.
Absences and remote work
During extreme weather, use your best judgement to decide whether it’s safe to travel to campus. Work with your supervisor on any schedule or location changes. If you normally work remotely, you should work as usual at your remote location even if the university is closed. Employees who perform essential services, which may include inclement weather response, are required to come to work even during a closure.
Instructors
If you’re unable to come to campus to teach, inform your department head and use Canvas to notify students of your plans for any missed sessions. Be flexible with students who can’t come to class or submit assignments due to the severe weather. The Office of the Provost will provide additional guidance related to specific weather events, as needed.
