Sustainable Cities offers three-day how-to conference in April

Early bird registration ends on Friday, Feb. 22, for the Sustainable City Year (SCY) conference that will be held in Eugene and Portland April 9-12. The event is presented by the University of Oregon's Sustainable Cities Initiative.

The three-day conference is for university representatives and partners interested in establishing SCY programs at their home institutions.

Lecture covers “athletes, geeks and gamers”

While a growing body of literature looks at women and girls in relation to gender and gaming, very little has been written regarding boys and men in that area.

So says T.L. Taylor, associate professor at MIT, who will deliver the free public lecture “Athletes, Geeks, and Gamers: Exploring Gender and Professional E-sports” at 5 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Knight Library Browsing Room, 1501 Kincaid St.

Student/faculty/staff tickets for Dalai Lama’s visit to UO

The University of Oregon and the Eugene Sakya Center (Nyen-Gyud Samten Choeling for Tibetan Buddhist Studies) are co-organizing a visit by His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, to the University of Oregon campus on Friday, May 10. A limited number of tickets for this event will be made available to University of Oregon students, faculty and staff before they go on sale to the public. 

New director hired for Holden Center

Rian Satterwhite has been hired as the new director of the Holden Center for Leadership and Community Engagement (The Holden Center) at the University of Oregon and will begin work at the university this week.

Satterwhite, who has served for the past five years as assistant director of the Center for Student Leadership at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia, was hired for the UO position following a nationwide search.

Family movie night premieres with “Brave”

The University of Oregon will bring the popcorn; you bring the family.

Ducks After Dark will host a free movie night for UO families Thursday, Feb 28. The movie “Brave” will be featured at 6:45 p.m. in PLC 180, and the university will provide popcorn and candy to share.

Ducks after Dark is an Erb Memorial Union program that provides students the opportunity to plan and implement events; it functions as a student program board presenting late-night film festivals.

UO alum Ann Curry to present Ruhl Lecture Feb. 28

NBC reporter Ann Curry, a University of Oregon graduate, will return to her alma mater to present the 2013 Ruhl Lecture on journalism ethics.

Curry, who received her bachelor's degree in 1978 from the UO's School of Journalism and Communication, will speak on “Journalism: An Act of Faith in the Future.” The lecture is at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, in the Ford Alumni Center's Giustina Ballroom. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Second of five small-group discussions on armed police issue to be held at noon today (Feb. 21)

The second of five small-group meetings with interim UOPD Chief Carolyn McDermed will be from noon to 1 p.m. today in the EMU Board Room, as discussions continue on the issue of arming campus police officers.

The first of three campus-wide forums on the issue was Feb. 11. The remaining forums are on Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., at the EMU Fir Room; and Wednesday, March 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Knight Library Browsing Room.
