UO innovation on display

A busy month of research-themed events got under way on Monday, with an Innovation Luncheon, featuring a speaker from a venture capital firm, and an Innovation Open House, highlighting companies and programs with ties to University of Oregon research.

Both events were presented by the office for Research, Innovation and Graduate Education.

Memorial planned for UO’s David Lee Baker

All members of the University of Oregon community are welcome at a memorial for David Baker at 4 p.m. on Monday, May 13, in Knight Library, Room 101. Baker, who served as an instructional technology consultant at the UO Libraries, died April 29 at age 35.

He began working at the UO Libraries as a student assistant in 2002. He joined the library staff in 2004, initially working in Access Services and then joining the library’s Center for Media and Educational Technologies in 2007.

Good news for grads: Average starting salaries for grads with bachelor’s degrees rise 5.3 percent

Students graduating in June and entering the workforce are in for some good news on the job front. Starting salaries for FY13 graduates are up a little over 5 percent, according to a National Association of Colleges and Employers April 2013 Salary Survey.

Salaries dropped in 2010 as a result of the Great Recession, but are now on the upswing – to the delight and relief of both graduating students and career counselors.

UO choir wins international competition

The University of Oregon Chamber Choir has placed first at the Fleischmann International Trophy Competition at the Cork International Choral Festival in Cork, Ireland – one of Europe’s most prestigious choral arts events.

Judges at the competition on Saturday, May 4, awarded the Chamber Choir a score of 92.67 percent, surpassing the local favorites, New Dublin Voices. That ensemble’s score of 90.11% was the second highest among the competitors.

University Day coming May 16

Grab a shovel and a few friends: This year’s University Day – the annual campus-wide beautification event – runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 16.

Started in 1905 to improve the grounds before commencement, the day has evolved to celebrate and preserve the natural beauty of the campus.

Each spring, more than 2,000 UO students, staff/faculty and the community gather to plant flowers, spread bark dust and enjoy live entertainment as they improve the campus landscape.

UO's Schnitzer Museum to present Su Kwak exhibition

The University of Oregon's Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art will present the West Coast premiere of “Light Journey: An Odyssey in Paint” – a retrospective exhibition of the art of Su Kwak – for two months beginning May 28.

The exhibition, in the Schnitzer Museum's Focus Gallery, is organized by the Brauer Museum of Art at Valparaiso University and curated by Jungsil Lee.

It will open with a free, public reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 31. Kwak will lead an artist’s talk on Saturday, June 1, at 2 p.m.
