It can be difficult making the jump from high school to college.

But taking time off after high school to serve your country? That can make the move to a university setting all the tougher.

Fortunately, a new facility on the University of Oregon campus will help student veterans settle into college life and succeed: The Student Veterans Center will provide a dedicated space for student veterans to get resources and gather with their families at the university.

An upcoming lecture promises to be an “animated” experience.

Virginia Morell, an author, science writer and animal-intelligence advocate, will lecture on animal thoughts and emotions at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in 100 Willamette Hall.

Morell’s discussion will center on her recently published book, “Animal Wise: The Thoughts and Emotions of Our Fellow Creatures.”

Noted poet Nicole Brossard and one of her translators will visit the University of Oregon April 18-19 to host free public talks that cover feminist translations.

Brossard, a Quebec poet, novelist and feminist theorist, will give a public lecture with translator Susanne de Lotbinière-Harwood from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 18, in the Knight Library Browsing Room. The two will engage in a conversation together and a buffet reception will follow.

The University of Oregon's Office of Emergency Management and Continuity wants to make sure everyone knows what to do if an earthquake were to shake Eugene.

The UO office is teaming up with the Oregon Pacific Chapter of the American Red Cross to offer a one-hour "Earthquake Readiness" training on April 19, in conjunction with April's Earthquake Awareness Month observances in Oregon. Registration is required. The training session will be from noon to 1 p.m.

Max Siegel, the CEO of USA Track and Field, picked UO Day at the Capitol as the venue to announce that the Olympic Track and Field Trials will be held at historic Hayward Field in 2016 – the third straight trials to be held in TrackTown USA.

University of Oregon President Michael Gottfredson testified before a legislative committee today (April 11) that an institutional governing board will help the UO keep top students in Oregon, retain valued faculty and appeal more effectively to donors.

A test of the UO Alert! Emergency Notification System will be conducted on Tuesday, April 16 by the UO Emergency Management and Continuity (UOEMC) program.

Advocates for the University of Oregon – students, alumni, faculty, staff and others – were set to converge on Salem today (April 11) for the UO's once-every-two-years Day at the Capitol.

The object of the event is to inform lawmakers and others about the university's accomplishments and reach. UO programs and the university’s service to the state are highlighted through displays in the Capitol Galleria, student performances in the House and Senate, and visits with legislators.

Chip Lord, founder of the architecture and media collaborative Ant Farm, is in Eugene for events in conjunction with the exhibition “West of Center: Art and the Counterculture Experiment in America, 1965-1977.”

Lord will showcase his video art as part of Schnitzer Cinema and present an artist talk on the history of Ant Farm.

UO Global Seminars are academic programs conducted – in full or in part – in international settings. The seminars are set to launch in 2014-15, including summer 2014.
