The home of the University of Oregon Department of Mathematics has some new décor.
“SubDivision,” a site-specific sculpture by Los Angeles Artist Volkan Alkanoglu, has been installed in the Fenton Hall atrium by the Oregon Arts Commission. Alkanoglu was chosen for the project by an art selection committee made up of UO faculty, staff, the architect for the building's recent renovation and Eugene-area art professionals.
A tuition bill before the Oregon Legislature will make college more affordable for the state’s high school graduates and should be approved, University of Oregon President Michael Gottfredson said Wednesday, in testimony to a House committee in Salem.
Speaking before the House Committee on Higher Education and Workforce Development, Gottfredson urged passage of House Bill 2787, which would provide tuition equity to Oregonians similar to a law approved in California in 2001.
Oregon had 74,000 reported cases of child abuse and neglect in 2011 – a jump of 85 percent since 2000.
But a new organization administered through the University of Oregon’s College of Education is working to reverse this troubling trend by preventing abuse before it happens.
Professor Judith Sheine joined the School of Architecture and Allied Arts in December as the Department of Architecture's new head. She is a nationally-recognized educator and architect, and comes to Oregon from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
“Judith was selected from a national pool to lead the department and will build on the strong work and success already present in the department’s faculty, staff, and students,” said A&AA Dean Frances Bronet.

The award-winning UO Gospel Singers will present a pair of benefit concerts to raise funds for the ensemble’s upcoming trip to China.
The concerts, tagged “Reaching Out,” will be at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23 at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 17625 NW Cornell Rd. in Beaverton. The suggested donation for each concert is $20, to be paid onsite. Reservations, however, are required to secure a seat and may be made at http://music.uoregon.edu/gospel.

The University of Oregon will once again focus on "positive body image" during the week of Feb. 18, in a campaign this week and this campaign meant to help UO faculty, staff and students feel comfortable with their appearance.
The third-year effort is being coordinated by the UO Counseling and Testing Center, Health Center, the Student Recreation Center and University Housing. The "All Sizes Fit" campaign features a week’s worth of displays, presentations and activities that promote acceptance of body shapes while raising awareness about a health-at-all-sizes approach.
A celebration of life will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, for Rebecca "Becky" Vaughan, a longtime employee of the University of Oregon.
Vaughan died of cancer on Jan. 31. She was 62.
She worked since 1984 in the UO Police Department and the Parking and Transportation Department. She began her UO career in police dispatch, shifted to the front office in parking and then served for many years as that department's access coordinator. More recently, she continued to work half-time in parking during her retirement.
