“Takin' it to the Streets” focuses on neighborhoods April 13

“Takin’ it to the Streets” – it’s not just a Doobie Brothers classic.

It’s also the name of an annual service project by more than 60 UO students and partners to give back to the communities in which they live by participating in a day of service.

“Takin’ it to the Streets” is an annual service project aimed to improve near-campus area neighborhoods and bring neighbors together with a shared activity.

Preservation field school to take place at Whidbey Island

The Pacific Northwest Preservation Field School will return to Puget Sound and Whidbey Island this year, where five sessions will take place during August and September.

Topics include cultural landscapes, cultural resources management, advanced preservation technology and vernacular farmstead preservation. The hands-on work this year will include window rehabilitation, roofing replacement, barn door rehabilitation and siding repair.

Human society studies have overlooked animals' role

Pets and domesticated animals haven't received proper credit for all they've done to to help shape human societies, University of Oregon sociologist Richard York says in a recently published paper.

York and fellow sociologist Philip Mancus of the College of the Redwoods in Crescent City, Calif., made their case for four-legged friends in a paper published in the current issue of the quarterly journal Sociological Theory. Animals have had "profound influence" in driving the evolution of human societies, the pair say.
