The UO admissions office threw some cold water on a hot challenge this week.
After being called out by a colleague, admissions director Jim Rawlins took park in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge outside Oregon Hall on Monday (Aug. 18). Rawlins, who accepted the challenge from an admissions officer at the University of Georgia, stood calmly while coworkers poured icewater from a large cooler over his head.
A video of the event is available here.
The Ice Bucket Challenge has become an Internet sensation over the past few weeks, raising more than $13 million for the ALS Association since July 29. The association finances research and provides support for people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gerhig’s Disease.
People who take part have a bucket of icewater dumped over them and challenge three friends to do the same or donate $100 to ALS. Many do both, posting more video challenges on Facebook, Instagram or other social media sites.
Rawlins challenged admissions colleagues at Ohio State University, the University of Denver and the University of Arizona to follow his example.
