Annual benefit open enrollment has started

It's that time of year again: Annual benefit open enrollment has begun.

Employees can now complete the open enrollment process. Action must be taken by all benefit-eligible employees even if no changes are being made. The deadline for completing open enrollment is Monday, Oct. 31.

The benefits office maintains an open enrollment webpage to provide employees with instructions, information and quick links to everything needed to complete the process quickly.

“We will keep you up to date and informed,” said Cindi Peterson, benefits manager, “and ask that employees set aside time to take action well in advance of the Oct. 31 deadline.”

Open enrollment is completed in a two-step process as described by the benefits office. First, benefit-eligible employees elect enrollment in plans for 2017, which includes electing participation in the Health Engagement Model. Second, those currently participating in the model complete a health assessment.

All new, current and returning benefit-eligible employees must take action for 2017 benefits to avoid penalties, which include higher plan deductible and surcharges.

The few plan changes that take effect in 2017 enhance service options for employees, Peterson said. A summary of plan changes is available on the open enrollment webpage.

Employees need to be aware of changes to the premium structure. According to Peterson, the Public Employees Benefit Board is changing the allocation of cost for each coverage tier to align with Affordable Care Act provisions and industry standards. Employees can learn more about premium tier changes in the open enrollment section of the human resources website.

Peterson emphasized the importance of taking action sooner rather than later.

“The benefits office will send reminders throughout open enrollment, but it is up to each individual to manage his or her benefit elections and take necessary action,” Peterson said. Contact the benefits office for open enrollment questions and assistance.
