Annual ‘Relationship Check-in’ rescheduled for Feb. 15

After inclement weather forced the postponement of the “Relationship Check-In” at the University of Oregon on Saturday, Feb. 8, the event will now be held on Saturday, Feb. 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the HEDCO Clinic on the UO campus (17th and Alder streets).

Master’s-level therapists from the Couples and Family Therapy (CFT) Program in the College of Education will conduct free, one-time sessions to celebrate and recognize strengths in relationships and, if desired, to identify areas for improvement or deeper work. Individuals, any and all couples and families from the UO and the community are welcome to attend.

The 2013 Relationship Check-In drew 34 couples and two individuals, who not only fine-tuned their relationships but left the clinic with Valentine’s Day gifts contributed by area businesses. Several chose to continue therapy at the clinic, which offers individual, couple and family counseling on a sliding scale based on income.

Like the CFT Clinic, the Relationship Check-In is staffed by second-year master’s students in Couples and Family who are therapists in training. CFT Clinical Director Dr. Tiffany Brown calls the event “a service to the community and a learning opportunity for both students and participants.”

“There’s the educational component, which is invaluable,” Brown says. “Our students learn best when they are able to experience different views and perspectives.  It’s a low-commitment, free opportunity for anyone wanting to check in about their relationship or get a glimpse into the therapeutic process.”

Brown says, “You may learn new things about yourself and your relationship with your loved one.  An hour on a Saturday afternoon to check in about your relationship seems like a worthwhile investment.”

Sessions will last approximately 50 minutes. Interested couples are encouraged to call the clinic at 541-346-0923 to make an appointment, though walk-ins on the day of the event are also invited.
