Some are outstanding mentors to students. Some are demonstrating excellence early in their careers as faculty members. Some are leading the way in research — or just leading the way, period.
There are scores of faculty and staff members at the University of Oregon worthy of recognition for their exceptional efforts. It’s time to think about nominating them for an award.
With spring’s return, faculty and staff members nominated by peers will be recognized through recognition programs administered by a variety of units. Over the coming weeks, employees can expect a steady stream of requests from various departments to take a few minutes to submit the name of someone who should be celebrated for their hard work.
More than 20 university-sponsored awards are issued by the Office of the Provost, the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation, the University of Oregon Senate and Human Resources.
The provost’s office, for example, issues distinguished teaching awards that are the university’s highest honor for instruction — among them, the A.J. Ersted Award for Distinguished Teaching. The Division of Graduate Studies will honor mentorship and key supporters of graduate students. The Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation recognizes, among others, faculty for early-career accomplishments and innovation breakthroughs. The senate recognizes the person “who has best exemplified the principles of shared governance, transparency and trust during the past year,” while human resources will seek nominations for outstanding officer of administrations and classified employees.
The various requests for nominations will appear in Workplace and land in email inboxes soon. While the nomination and selection processes are managed by different offices, officials say, the awards season is a collective effort across the university that requires broad participation to ensure that outstanding faculty and staff members get the recognition they deserve.
