Bike-friendly UO earns a spot on list of best campuses for bicycles

Biking is totally a thing at the UO.

Not only has the campus earned a gold rating from the League of American Bicyclists, it recently landed on a list of the 40 Best Bike Friendly College Campuses prepared by the Best College Values website. The UO earned the No. 22 spot, just below the University of Washington (No. 19) but well above this weekend’s football opponent Michigan State University (No. 36).

The website based its ratings on campus bike challenges, clubs and classes; miles of campus bike paths; and how well bicycling is integrated for the convenience and ease of students.

A 2012 survey indicated that bicycling is the top commute choice for UO students, faculty and staff. About 62 percent of students and 72 percent of faculty and staff own bikes. The university encourages the use of alternative transportation by offering more than 6,600 bike parking stations compared to only about half as many car parking spaces.
