Brown University professor Tina M. Campt will visit campus as part of this year’s Lorwin Lecture Series and the UO’s celebration of Black History Month.

Campt’s talk, which explores “The New Black Gaze” in visual arts, will be held Monday, Feb. 17, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Ford Lecture Hall at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.

Campt is the Owen F. Walker Professor of Humanities and Modern Culture and Media, and also is a founding member of the Practicing Refusal Collective. Her most recent book, “Listening to Images,” explores a way of listening closely to photography, engaging with lost archives of historically dismissed photographs of black subjects taken throughout the black diaspora.

She also is the recipient of numerous research grants and fellowships and serves as research associate at the Visual Identities in Art and Design Research Centre at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa.
