Each year, KWAX Classical Oregon, the University of Oregon’s all-classical public radio station puts together a three-day program of music guaranteed to put you in the holiday spirit, even in 2020.
Beginning at 4 p.m. Dec. 23 with “Christmas with the King’s Singers,” a popular British a cappella ensemble, the station, at 91.1 FM, will showcase some of the world’s most renowned orchestras and choral groups performing 19 different Christmas and Hanukkah specials.
Christmas Eve highlights include “Christmas at the Movies,” featuring a variety of time-honored film favorites at 2 p.m., “Christmastime in New York” performed by the Cathedral Choir of St. John the Devine at the Metropolitan Museum of Art at 4 p.m. Handel’s “Messiah” with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra at 8 p.m.
On Christmas Day, listeners can enjoy the annual St. Olaf Christmas concert at 8 a.m., “KWAX Presents: The Oregon Bach Festival Christmas Program” at 10 a.m., followed by performances by the Tabernacle Choir at noon and concluding the day with “Winter Holidays from Around the World” with Bill McLaughlin at 4 p.m.
“When it comes to holiday music, there’s no richer tradition than that of classical music,” said KWAX Musical Director Peter van de Graaff. “It is a privilege to reach into our record library and share not only the great carols performed by the best choirs and ensembles but also to air programs celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year’s around the world.”
The station’s broad network of transmitters and translators allow listeners across the state to tune in to this year’s 2020 KWAX holiday lineup.
KWAX programming can also be streamed online at www.kwax.com as well as via TuneIn, Internet Radio, iTunes and other streaming services. A complete list of KWAX Christmas programming also can be viewed at the station’s website.
