The awards piled up for Edward Cheserek Tuesday afternoon as the Newark, N.J., native by way of Kenya was named the National Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. He also earned Pac-12 Athlete of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and first-team all-conference after winning the NCAA Cross Country Championship in Terre Haute, Ind. Cheserek also earned USTFCCCA All-America honors with his first-place finish at the national championship meet.

With wins at the Pac-12 Championship, West Regional and NCAA Championship in succession, Cheserek became the first Duck to accomplish that feat since Galen Rupp in 2008. Parker Stinson also earned First-Team All-Pac-12.

The national athlete of the year honor is only the second in Oregon cross country history since the award was first handed out in 1994.

Cheserek also became the second athlete to sweep the awards for Pac-12 Athlete of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and the USTFCCCA Athlete of the Year. Lawi Lalang of Arizona was the first to do it in 2011.

The Pac-12 Athlete of the Year accolade was the 10th all-time in Oregon history. Cheserek became the second straight Duck to earn the Newcomer of the Year award and sixth all-time.

His win at the NCAA Championships was the third straight victory for the freshman and fourth title this season. Cheserek opened his collegiate career winning the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown and reeled off consecutive victories at the Pac-12 Conference Championships, NCAA West Regional and the NCAA Championship.

Cheserek also etched himself into the Oregon history books by becoming the first freshman ever to win the Pac-12 title. He was also the first true freshman to win the NCAA Championship since Bob Kennedy in 1988.
