With data theft at record highs cyber security will be a hot topic at this year’s Risk Summit for UO employees, set for June 8 in the Erb Memorial Union ballroom.

The annual workshop is free to employees and features a slate of campus experts presenting tips on how to be resilient in the workplace and be risk-aware, not risk-averse.

“University employees, especially business and office managers, are looking for the best strategies on how to control risks, minimize loss and basically have the safest and most productive workplaces possible,” UO Risk Manager Flo Hoskinson said. “We want to help jump them forward on the best-practices pathway.”

Only 150 spaces are available. The 2016 Risk Summit filled up early, so employees are encouraged to register soon on Making Tracks.

2017 topics include protection of minors on campus; volunteers and waivers; data security; workers compensation, accident reporting and accident investigation; changes in insurance, purchasing and contract services; navigating UO policies; top risks at the UO assessed by the Strategic Enterprise Risk Management and Compliance Committee; and more.

In 2016, UO Information Services responded to 218 reported phishing attempts that resulted in blocked links or sites, an increase of 234 percent from two years ago. More than 4.3 billion data records were stolen worldwide last year, the most ever by far, according to the cyber security firm Risk Based Security.
