Dead dinosaurs are no way to get to and from campus.
That’s why the UO has Transportation Day, an event that offers everything faculty, staff and students need to know about getting around without resorting to fossil fuels. The second annual celebration happens Tuesday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Chapman Lawn across from the Lillis Business Complex.
The daylong event will offer information about green ways of getting to, from and around campus along with activities and prizes to help encourage alternative transportation. It is hosted by the UO Bike Program, Student Sustainability Center and student group LiveMove and sponsored by the Department of Parking and Transportation, UO Police Department and the Craft Center.
More than 500 people turned out for last year’s inaugural Transportation Day to learn about services, register bikes and talk with bike shop representatives.
“UO Transportation Day is for students, faculty and staff who walk, bike and bus and for those who want to try out different modes to campus,” said Kelsey Moore, the UO Bike Program coordinator. “LTD will be here answering questions about bus routes and passes and the City of Eugene will be helping with bike route planning, so come on over there will be something for everyone.”
Free stuff includes bike repairs, T-shirts, reflective stickers and other bits of swag. Participants can screen print a bike shirt, register bikes and get help with route planning for both bikes and buses, as well as learn about transportation services on campus, talk with local bicycle businesses and more.
Giveaway prizes include a waterproof bike bag from Ortlieb, bike lights from Planet Bike and water bottle holders and lights from Portland Design Works. A commuter bike trailer from Burley also is among the prizes.
“This event is a success because a diverse group of student life programs and UO departments came together with the UO Bike Program and Student Sustainability Center to make it happen,” Moore said. “A huge thank you to LiveMove, UO Craft Center, UO Parking and Transportation and UOPD for helping make this event fun.”
