Several events this spring highlight the art and culture of Oregon’s vibrant Ukrainian community. Iryna Stavynska, a Fulbright scholar from Ukraine, is working with Oregon Folklife Network, the Department of Folklore, the School of Music and Dance, and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.

On Saturday, April 8, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., the Oregon Folklife Network will host artist Tetyana Horner for Ukrainian weaving. Participants will discover Ukrainian weaving, its process, patterns and roles in traditional and contemporary culture. See some real-life woven fabrics and try your hand at using a miniature loom. Tetyana Horner is a traditional weaver originally from Kakhovka in southern Ukraine. 

Later in April, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art will host two additional artists for programs: Sashko Danylenko’s “Superheroes Among Us” illustration series and Marina Malyarenko’s Petrykivka style works, which is a traditional style used for household decoration.

The programs join a slate of programming focused on Ukraine, including a presentation of Ukrainian folk music in February; a presentation on pysanka, the Ukrainian art of egg decorating; a community forum on Russia’s War in Ukraine; and Ukrainian language and culture workshops in April.
