Expand knowledge of cultural differences in learning community

Learn how to see the world through different eyes to gain insight into cultural differences. The University of Oregon community can sign up to attend the Mills International Center Learning Café: "Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Belonging, Teamwork and Communication."

The nine-session weekly small-group learning community will take place on Thursdays at noon from Oct. 10-Dec. 12, in the Erb Memorial Union. Lunch is provided. The registration deadline is Oct. 7 and participants should commit to attend all sessions, as possible.

Cultural perspectives heavily influence interpretations of behaviors and interactions, and people tend to misread each other. One example is a behavior that in one culture is intended to show respect for a person in authority may be misread in dominant U.S. cultural terms as lacking initiative.

The sessions will lay a foundation of cross-cultural skill and knowledge that will support continued learning and humility. Interactive activities, useful intercultural theories, personal stories, reflection and dialogue will be the core of the work.
