The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art is hosting a day filled with free, family-friendly activities on Saturday, May 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event is anchored by the museum’s main exhibition, “Rick Bartow: Things You Know But Cannot Explain.” Activities will include storytelling, a play by the museum’s own Dragon Puppet Theatre and feathered guests from the Cascades Raptor Center.
“This is a great opportunity for families to create art together, explore the galleries, enjoy performances and learn about the connection between storytelling and art,” said Arthurina Fears, manager of museum education programs.
From 11:00 a.m. to noon the “NewArt Northwest Kids” artist reception will take place. Following the reception, from noon to 3 p.m., local artist Linda Clare will host a quilt-making session. Mixed-media sculptures, displays of illustrated storytelling and The Cascades Raptor Center’s guests will all be on display concurrently.
Esther Stutzman will tell traditional stories of the Kalapuya tribe from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. with Stutzman giving another reading from 2:30 to 3 p.m. The museum will host more storytelling starting at 12:50 p.m. with Cynthia Olsen of the Eugene Public Library reading “The Boy Who Lived with Seals” and the Dragon Puppet Theatre will perform from 1:15 to 1:35 p.m.
Finally, a tour of the “Rick Bartow: Things You Know But Cannot Explain” exhibit, which showcases 40 years of the Oregon artist’s work, will take place from 1:40 to 2:25 p.m. with tours available in Spanish and English.
