Art activities, museum tours, performances and, of course, yummy snacks are all part of a free Family Day at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on Saturday, Dec. 7, from noon to 3 p.m.

“Family Day is a wonderful opportunity for us to bring the galleries to life by viewing them through the lens of a child,” said Hannah Bastian, manager of museum education programs.

Art activities are influenced by current exhibitions. Artist Marianne Walker will make illustrations in ink splats that are inspired by the Ralph Steadman exhibition. “Kwang Young Chun: Aggregations” was the motivation for a pattern and paper art activity. The Materials Exchange Center for Community Arts will lead a recycled art project, and museum staff will draft holiday cards with an impressionist style. Art activities are for children, and adults, of all ages.

“We love coming up with activities that will engage children and reflect the beautiful artwork on display,” Bastian said.

Performances throughout the day include storytelling with Mark Riddle from the Springfield Public Library, special performances by the Dragon Puppet Theatre and Upstart Crow Children’s Theatre, and a family-friendly museum tour.

From noon to 3 p.m., the schedule of art activities includes “Illustrations in Ink Splats” with Marianne Walker, inspired by Ralph Steadman; recycled art with MECCA; Impressionist art holiday cards; and “Celebrating Pattern with Paper Art,” inspired by “Kwang Young Chun: Aggregations.” Performances include story time with Mark Riddle, Springfield Public Library at 12:30 p.m.; Dragon Puppet Theatre at 1 p.m.; a museum highlights tour at 1:45 p.m.; and the Upstart Crow Children’s Theatre at 2 p.m.
