'Get Lectured' series offers winter architecture talks

The UO School of Architecture & Allied Arts celebrates its centennial anniversary this academic year, and this winter the school is featuring a lecture series that reflects its commitment to innovation and excellence.

Archinect.com, a well-known online hub for architects and students from all over the world, is featuring the University of Oregon’s winter lecture schedule — along with the highly-anticipated poster design — in its online series, “Get Lectured.”

Almost as important as the actual lectures is the poster design for the lecture series, said Erin Moore, an architecture professor at the UO. Each term, universities across the country exhibit their poster designs in a friendly rivalry, of sorts.

“Architecture as an academic discipline has a kind of culture around lecture series posters. It’s great that Archinect is building on that idea by featuring them,” she said. “Our poster designs are done by students as well, compared to other schools who hire professionals. It’s an honor for our students to be doing work that is on par with professionals in their field.”

Competitive poster designs aside, the series began Jan. 8 with a talk from UO professor Nancy Cheng at the university’s White Stag Building in Portland. While the lectures have already begun, there are several more opportunities to attend in the coming months.

Architects from Los Angeles to Paris to Shanghai will be making the trip to Oregon this term.

“We think it’s neat that our series includes design practitioners from around the world with our faculty here at the UO,” Moore said. “One thing that is unique about our lecture series is that it is curated mostly by students, so we invite the architects who they really want to hear from.”
