Kalapuya Ilihi residence hall at the University of Oregon temporarily closed in July 2023 to repair cracks in several walls throughout the building, discovered during regular maintenance. While originally expected to reopen during the 2024-25 academic year, the necessary sequencing of repair work throughout the building is causing repairs to be a longer process.
So as not to disrupt the educational environment, the residence hall will not house residential students or employees until the work is completed. Hamilton Hall will remain open for the 2024-25 academic year. Academic Residential Communities will remain in the same locations they are in this year.
Removing Hamilton Hall and developing a new green space is the final portion of the Hamilton Walton Transformation Project.
A beach volleyball facility is planned for the open green space area to be created when Hamilton Hall is removed. Planning work on the facility and associated improvements to the beach volleyball team's Matthew Knight Arena locker room facilities are underway.
Kalapuya Ilihi residence hall opened in 2017. In September 2023 the university filed a lawsuit to recover costs associated with repairs. An amended complaint was filed on Feb. 5, 2024, that increases the requested amount to $10 million from the original $7.5 million. The increase is to cover additional work involved in repairs and other impacted projects such as removing Hamilton Hall.
