Kim Hyatt, a former Oregon javelin thrower from 1989-92 and four-time All-American, has been named the recipient of the 2014 Becky L. Sisley Award with a presentation ceremony for the award to take place, Friday, Jan. 24 at halftime of the women’s basketball game against Washington State.

The Becky L Sisley Award was established to honor former women varsity athletes 20-25 years after graduation who have excelled  in their profession, been an active member in their community, and have provided support to the University of Oregon. It parallels the Leo Harris Award given to a former male athlete each fall.

Hyatt is currently the Dean and Athletic Director of Health, Physical Education, Athletics, Aquatics and Recreation at Mt. Hood Community College, a position she has held since 2010.

While competing as a Duck, Hyatt was ever-present on the national scene. As a freshman, she earned All-America status with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championships in the javelin followed by an improvement to sixth place as a sophomore.

As a junior in 1991 Hyatt helped the Oregon women to their first Pac-12 Championship, a title the Ducks would reclaim in 1992 during Hyatt’s prolific senior season where she was crowned the conference javelin champion before finishing third at the NCAA Championships.

After graduating from Oregon, Hyatt continued her education at Idaho State University where she served as a graduate teaching assistant while earning her master’s degrees in physical education and athletic administration. In addition to her responsibilities in the classroom, Hyatt was also an assistant coach for the Bengals’ track and field teams, a position she continued after graduation until she began the next chapter of her life at Weber State University.

Hyatt joined Weber State in 1999 where she held the positions of Drug and Alcohol Prevention Instructor, National Youth Sports Program Coordinator and Assistant Professor of Health Promotion and Exercise Science. She was heavily involved in professional activities at the time, while also playing a large role in the community and working toward her Ph.D. in health promotion and Education at the University of Utah, a degree she secured in 2004.

Throughout her various stops, Hyatt has remained connected to Oregon as a member of the Alumni Association, the Order of the O, Duck Athletic Fund contributor, and volunteering for the athletic department.

Hyatt came to Oregon from Prineville, Ore. (Crook County High School) by way of Lane Community College.

In the 15-year history of the Sisley Award, Wilson is the fourth track and field athlete to win the honor. Kim (Roth) Geelan won in 2007, Grace Golden in 2012 and Liz Wilson was the Sisley recipient last year.
