May is the month to bring out the bikes

No matter how many people your bicycle is built for, May is the month to ride it to campus.

The UO is helping the community celebrate National Bike Month by encouraging more people to ride their bikes to work and class and offering some special programs to make the trip smoother. More than 20 different events will be held on campus and around town to help people saddle up and ride.

On campus, the UO Bike Program will offer a free class on bike traveling, Bike Touring 101, on May 14. Guest presenters with extensive bike touring experience will offer tips on taking a bicycle vacation in the Northwest or beyond.

The class is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Outdoor Program Barn. Come prepared to discuss routes, gear, logistics and anything else about bike touring.

Women’s Bike Maintenance Night will be held May 19 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Outdoor Program Barn at 18th Avenue and University Street. Ellie Bartlett, a bike program mechanic, will provide an introduction to bike care and repair.

People can bring their own bike or work on one provided by the bike program. The cost is $5 and pre-registration is required by visiting the OP Barn or calling 541-346-4371.

Other events campus commuters can roll into include the Business Commute Challenge, May 9-15; National Bike to Work Day, May 15; a Kidical Mass Ride, May 16; and the Bike Polo Extravaganza, May 21.

A complete list of community events is available at webikeeugene.org or the group’s Facebook page.
